Every new thing we attempt, every new journey we begin, has some obstacles. This series will help you overcome the challenges of becoming a SAHM (stay-at-home-mom).

How can I be a stay at home mom if I can’t afford it?
When you think of being home with your kids full time, what do you see as a barrier to making this happen?
For me, it was being in debt and not knowing how we would be able to pay all of our expenses on one income. I didn’t know how to save enough money to stay home. Simply, it was not knowing how to make my dream of coming home a reality.
And I wasn’t alone.
Maybe you’ve asked, How can I be a stay at home mom if I can’t afford it?
Other women have mentioned coming up against obstacles in their journey from full-time work to full-time mom. I will list several common obstacles below.
Challenges of Becoming a SAHM
Action Step: In your journal, write down any of these obstacles that you identify with:
- Believing that it’s impossible to make it on one income in today’s economy.
- Being unable to focus on the goal because of having too many other priorities demanding your time and energy.
- Believing that you have to be great at budgeting in order to save enough money to support you while at home.
- Allowing fear to make you procrastinate – “If I put it off, I won’t get hurt if it doesn’t work out.”
- Feeling depressed because you aren’t able to be at home with your kids, and allowing the depression to keep you from making a step toward your goal.
- Feeling disappointed or angry because you can’t do what you want to do without great effort.
- Believing you just aren’t able to make all of the changes needed to make it happen.
- Being in debt and not seeing a way out of it.
Sometimes our dreams can seem almost unreachable. We want it so much, but it seems as if it just wasn’t meant for us. It’s easy to see how these obstacles can keep us from taking the first steps toward our goal. Some women have even given up completely on their dream, deciding it just wasn’t meant for them.
You may have even felt this way.
I want to encourage you today. You don’t have to give up on your dreams. I’m going to show you ways to knock down your obstacles and achieve your goal of being home with your kids.
Let’s start with a common obstacle: When will I be able to come home?
This is a major question for many women. It may even seem impossible to answer. It can be hard to imagine leaving your full-time work to become a stay at home, or work at home mom.
But we’re going to walk through this together.
Our first step is to set a target date for coming home and then we’ll build the steps you’ll need to take to make it a reality. We’ll work together so it doesn’t seem overwhelming.
So take your journal and write down the final date you want to come home by.
When would you like to say goodbye to your boss and walk through your front door knowing you are home for good?
It might seem scary to write this, but just know this date isn’t written in stone and you can change it at any time. However, I recommend that you keep it at one year or less. If you choose a date greater than a year, it may seem too far out and become discouraging.
Write your date where you can see it so you are always reminded of your goal.
Now take that date and divide it in half. If you wrote down one year, then subtract 6 months from that date. Write this date down next to your coming home date. This will be your half-way check point for your journey to become an at home mom.
We will be going through some steps that will teach you how to begin saving for coming home, and how to adjust to living on one income. If you have mastered these steps by your half-way point, then it will be like getting a part-time income. And it will be easier to adjust from part-time to fully at home from that point forward.
Beginning right now, let’s focus just on making it to the half-way point. You can do this!
