It was the middle of the night. Everyone else was asleep, but I was wide awake, tossing and turning, dreading having to go to work the next morning.
Then I broke.
Tears started flowing and I couldn’t make them stop. I felt I just couldn’t do it anymore. I couldn’t go back to work.
It wasn’t where I worked or what I did. I loved my company and my career. I just had gotten to the breaking point of trying to balance being there for my family and being there for my company.
It was at this point I made the decision to come home.
That night, I made the decision to end my corporate career and become a work-at-home mom.
And then the peaceful sleep came.
Someone reading this post can identify with how I felt.
Perhaps there’s a mom reading this post who cries silently, almost on a daily basis, wishing she had the courage to say, “I quit.”
You can make the decision to come home and successfully make the transition from working mom to work at home mom.
It can be done.
You just need a compelling reason why.
And that reason is because your children (and your sanity) are worth it.
I wish I could say the journey for me was seamless and easy at the start, but I had to find my way with little direction. I had to look in many different places for the answers to “how” to make it happen.
But I didn’t give up, and once I found my way, I made it a priority to help other working mothers, who wanted to transition their careers home, be able to find the steps and resources needed – in one place.

Is Making Money From Home for You?
If you’re in the position like I was, having to find a way to contribute to the household income, then you’ll want to first determine if you have the following characteristics and skills commonly associated with successful at-home mompreneurs:
- Risk taker – Being a work at home mom means you’re the one making the tough business decisions, even those that involve uncertainty. Do you try to avoid uncertainty at all costs? If yes, then working from home may not be for you. If you enjoy the thrill of taking calculated risks, then read on.
- Independent – When working from home, you have to make a lot of decisions on your own. If you’re already comfortable in trusting your instincts – and the occasional rejection doesn’t bother you – you could be on your way to working from home.
- Creative – Can you come up with new ways to solve challenges you face? Are you able to think of new ideas? Work at home moms must be able to think creatively and have ideas about how they can take advantage of new opportunities that come their way.
- Focused – Working from home comes complete with many distractions. Laundry, housekeeping, gardening, kids, spouse and even tasks you normally hate will compete for your attention. You have to practice focusing on what’s most important at the time. Creating a flexible schedule will help you stay on track.
- Multi-tasker – Balancing family responsibilities and working from home takes patience and the ability to manage more than one project at a time. If you’re comfortable with handling various tasks at once, then starting a home business may be a good fit.
- Support from others – Making a transition from a 9 to 5 career to working from home can be challenging, so having a good support system in place before you make that move is crucial. You’ll be faced with many important decisions, especially in the first months of coming home. If you find you don’t have the support of friends and family, then consider finding a business mentor. A business mentor is someone who has made the transition home, and is successful and willing to give guidance and advice.

Do you still feel that starting your own home business is for you? Wonderful! Now, ask yourself these 20 questions to help you think through the right key business decisions:
- Why am I starting a business?
- What kind of business do I want?
- How will I manage the demands of my family along with my business?
- Who is my ideal customer?
- How will I reach my ideal customer?
- What products or services will my business provide?
- Am I prepared to spend the time and money needed to get my business started?
- What sets my business idea, and the products or services I will provide, apart from others in similar markets?
- Am I able to manage it alone or will I need to hire assistants?
- How much money do I need to get started?
- Do I have enough to finance it or will I need to get a loan?
- How soon will it take before my products or services are available?
- How long can my family survive before I start making a profit?
- Who are my competitors?
- How will I price my services or products compared to my competition?
- How will I market my business?
- How will I set up the legal structure of my business?
- What taxes do I need to pay?
- What kind of insurance do I need?
- How will I advertise my business?
I encourage you to really think through and write down the answers to these questions. Your responses are the basis of your home business plan which will guide your business decisions.
